One of America's most respected authorities on piano literature, Dr. Maurice Hinson received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Music Teachers national Association at its Washington, D.C. convention in the spring of 1994, the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Florida in 1990 and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Michigan in the falll of 1995.  Dr. Hinson is hailed as a specialist in American piano music.  Some of his most recent articles appear in the New Grove Dictionary of American Music in the United States.

Dr. Hinson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida and his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Michigan.  He also studied at The Julliard School and the Conservatoire National in Nancy, France.

As Senior Professor of Piano in the School of Church Music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Hinson's curriculum includes teaching piano, piano literature and piano chamber music.  he has performed, lectured and given master classes worldwide.

Dr. Hinson has edited more than 200 publications for Alfred Publishing Company.  His books and editions have become classic standards in the studios of serious piano teachers and students the world over.

"Thoughtful Practice for the Elementary Student"

Rebecca McCord is a multi-faceted pianist, having performed as solo recitalist, chamber musician, duo pianist, and soloist with orchestra in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Making her debut at the age of nine, Dr. McCord has made guest artist appearances with over thirty orchestras including Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Houston, Eastman Philharmonic, Rome Festival and Tanglewood under such prestigious conductors as Erich Leinsdorf, Sir John Barbirolli, David Effron, Guy Fraser Harrison and Max Rudolf. As a young pianist, she was prizewinner in over twenty competitions, including the Naumburg, Bloch Young Artist, Masters Young Artist, Naftzger Young Artist, MTNA, and NFMC. She is a founding member of Trillium, The Commonwealth Trio, Tanglewood Trio, Lyric Quartet and the McNutt-Bohon Piano Duo. She has performed with the Fry Street Quartet, the James Quartet, and the Garth Newel Quartet. Among the works that she has premiered are Koschka Suite, Jonathan D. Green; La maîtresse des marteaux, Jonathan D. Green; Toccata, James Legg; and Florilegium, Book II, Verne Reynolds.

Dr. McCord received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Oklahoma City University, where she studied piano with Ernestine Holmes Scott, voice with Florence Birdwell, and chamber music with Stephen Stalker and Kenji Kobyashi. She was named a Presidential Scholar and was the recipient of a full scholarship to OCU. During her undergraduate years, she also studied piano with Adele Marcus at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She earned the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance and Literature, as well as the prestigious Performer's Certificate, from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. At Eastman, she studied piano with Barry Snyder and Cecile Staub Genhart, accompanying with Robert Spillman and Samuel Sanders, chamber music with Abram Loft and John Celentano, and voice with Jan deGaetani. During her doctoral studies, Dr. McCord was a Graduate Assistant in Studio Piano and Choral Conducting Assistant to Donald Neuen. Her performance of Brahms' Ziguenerleider with the Eastman Chorale is on the Pantheon label. She was named a Leopold Schepp Scholar and Outstanding Graduate Student at the Eastman School of Music.

Since 1985, Dr. McCord has been on the music faculty of Sweet Briar College. She has served as Director of the Gager Community Concert Series, the Chamber Music Series, and the Institute for Piano Performance & Pedagogy. Dr. McCord served as departmental chair for many years. In 1998, Dr. McCord was recipient of Sweet Briar's Faculty Fellowship and the first-ever post-doctorate fellowship at the Eastman School of Music.

Dr. McCord has broad and varied musical interests, which are reflected in her course offerings. Among the courses she has taught are Studio Piano, Rudiments of Music, Piano Pedagogy, Jazz Piano, Introduction to MIDI, Elementary & Advanced Theory, Forms & Analysis, Honors Seminar in Jazz Studies, Interdisciplinary Seminar in Shakespeare & Music, Interdisciplinary Seminar in Women & Music and Introduction to Film Music.

Dr. McCord regularly serves as clinician, master class teacher, and adjudicator for MTNA organizations throughout the U.S. She is currently President of the Central Virginia Music Teachers Association.

PATRICIA GRIGGS BURNHAM received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she studied Piano Performance and Pedagogy. She earned a Master of Music Education and a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Music Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.

Dr. Burnham grew up in Virginia Beach, VA where she began her piano study at the age of 6. She has performed as a soloist and accompanist in major cities throughout the United States including the Ambassador Theater in LA and the Wolftrap Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. She has collaborated in concert with the late guitarist Charlie Byrd, Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-lima and flutist Carol Wincence.

Dr. Burnham has held University teaching positions at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA and Concordia University at Austin, TX. She has been part of the music faculty at Concordia University in Austin, TX since 1998.

Along with University teaching, Dr. Burnham also teaches private piano students in and around the Austin area and the city Bastrop, TX. Students participate in the National piano guild auditions, ADMTA state theory tests and festivals, and studio recitals.

Dr. Burnham is also an active accompanist. She works in several of the voice studios at the University of TX in Austin, and also with area high school band and choirs accompanying students for UIL contests. Other professional activities include adjudicating for the National Piano Guild and the National Federation of Music Clubs, appearing in Master Classes and workshops, reviewing for professional music publications, and church work as pianist for First Baptist Church in Bastrop, TX.

She has been recorded on Concord Records with guitarist Carlos Barbosa-lima. Her solo CD was recorded in 2003.

Dr. Burnham is a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Austin District Music Teachers Association, the Music Teacher’s National Association, Texas Music Educator’s Association, the College Music Society and ASCAP.

 Jamaican-born pianist, Grace McFarlane, make her professional debut in Kingston, Jamaica, and has subsequently appeared as soloist and chamber artist in North America, China, Argentina and in her native country.  Her performances have consistently elicited enthusiastic responses.

As a member of the Trio dell' Arte, she performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada and made her New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall. Her Washington D.C. appearances include the Kennedy Center, The Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery, the Sumner School Museum, The Lyceum, George Mason
University, Lisner Auditorium and Church of the Epiphany. She served as a guest-lecturer for the Smithsonian Institution's "Campus on the Mall" and participated in the Smithsonian/PBS Documentary, "People and Pianos - 300 years". She has also recorded Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Wheaton Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. McFarlane served on the faculties of the University of Maryland, Peabody Preparatory, Wheaton and Judson Colleges. A member of the piano faculty at the Levine School of Music since 1989, she took a 5-year leave of absence (1993-1997) to accompany her husband and daughter on a resident assignment to Beijing, China. During that period she frequently gave solo and chamber performances and conducted master classes in several major Chinese cities. She was invited back to China in the 1998-99 season to perform duo-piano recitals with four Chinese women pianists.

In addition to performing, she maintains an active teaching schedule in her private studio as well as at the Levine School of Music. She frequently is invited to give master classes, adjudicate competitions and give pedagogy workshops. Ms. McFarlane is the immP.diate past-President of the Washington Music Teachers Association.
