Purpose of TMTF The Tidewater Music Teachers Forum of Virginia was founded by David Carr Glover and other interested music teachers in October of 1964. There were 31 charter members. The present membership is composed of music teachers who are currently or were formerly involved in music education, in the areas of piano, organ, voice, theory, composition, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. These teachers are from the Tidewater Virginia area which includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and the surrounding communities. The objective of the organization is to provide a forum wherein teachers may assemble for the purpose of: · Establishing a code of ethics and a professional standard of music teaching; · Elevating the status of the music teacher in the community; and · Sharing related problems and exploring current trends in music education. The Tidewater Music Teachers Forum meets on the third Tuesday of the month, from September through May (with the exception of December). Members are notified of meeting places. There is a music display by one of the local music stores at 9:30 a.m. The business meeting and program are held from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Nationally known musicians present workshops and events are scheduled throughout the year for student participation. The Tidewater Music Teachers Forum is affiliated with the Virginia Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. Members are encouraged to enter students in the various auditions and competitions sponsored annually by the Virginia Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. The Tidewater Music Teachers Forum administers three scholarships, two on the local level and one on the state level (see the “SCHOLARSHIPS” PAGES FOR DETAILS). The Tidewater Music Teachers Forum is an effective and unique organization for teachers of all instruments in the communities it encompasses. If you are not a member at the present time, you are cordially invited to join the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum of Virginia and, through sharing ideas and knowledge, together we will grow as professional music teachers.
