Stephan Bardas has a distinguished career not only as a concert pianist, but also as a brilliant interpreter.  He has an impressive musical background of study with some of the outstanding pianists of our time, including Edwin Fischer at the Academy of Music in Berlin, Alfredo Casella at the Conservatory Santa Cecilia in Rome, and Artur Schnabel.

His repertoire is broad in scope with an encompassing technique, intellectual curiosity and exceptional memory.  His programs feature major works of all schools and styles, many of special interest such as the complete Etudes of Chopin, Debussy and Liszt, in addition to important compositions by Casella, Copland, Ives and other twentieth-century composers.  He is well-known for his performances of the complete set of thirty-two Beethoven Sonatas.

Mr. Bardas has appeared as soloist under the batons of Ansermet, Rodzinski, Kubelik, Muench and Reiner.

As a pianist who enjoys sharing his musical experience, Mr. Bardas is also a renowned pedagogue.  He has been permanently associated as Professor of Piano at universities such as Northwestern and Illinois Wesleyan and Resident Artist at North Texas State University and the University of Tulsa.  He has also been Visiting artist at the University of Colorado, Washington University, the University of North Carolina and many others.  His master classes and lecture-recitals have been an inspiration to music teachers throughout the country.

Virginia Hutchings

 

Virginia Hutchings, distinguished teacher and pianist, holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Juilliard School of Music where she was a  scholarship student of Madame Rosina Lhevinne.  She pursued further studies in London with Rosalyn Tureck and Ilona Kabos.  In addition to three grants from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music, and grants from the Institute for International Education, Ms. Hutchings received the Marvin MacDonald Scholarship from the Atlanta Music Club and the Mary Duke Biddle Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Juilliard piano faculty.  She was a winner in many competitions, including the Friday Morning Music Club National Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. and the Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. 

Ms. Hutchings played two recitals in London at Wigmore Hall in 1974,  and her New York debut recital at Alice Tully Hall in 1977.  She has  performed recitals throughout Europe and the United States.  By special invitation of the Swedish Consulate in Italy, she presented more than fifty concerts at the Axel Munthe Foundation on the island of Capri, being the first American ever to be invited to play there.  She has recorded for the Swedish Radio in Stockholm and has presented Bach recitals at the Carmel Bach Festival and for the International Bach Society at Lincoln Center. 

Ms. Hutchings has taught on the faculties of Texas Tech University, Stetson University, and the University of Northern Iowa, and has given masterclasses in Berkeley, Louisville, Orlando, Washington, Norfolk, Atlanta, and Omaha.  With Wendy Hilton, specialist in Eighteenth Century French Court Dance, she has performed in lecture recitals at universities across the United States and for eight summers, she co-taught, with Ms. Hilton, a summer workshop in Baroque Music and Dance at Stanford University. 

She has been clinician at many keyboard workshops and state music teachers conventions where she has given lectures and lecture recitals such as The Teacher's Art, The Bach Partitas, Bach's Keyboard Music Written in the Dance Forms, and Beethoven's Late Music -- the String Quartets and Piano Sonatas  She continues to be much in demand as a recitalist, clinician, and lecturer.  Her students have won any prestigious competitions, including the Yamaha High School competition at the MTNA National Convention in Kansas City.

 Virginia Hutchings' visit is being co-sponsored by Old Dominion University, where she will give a recital of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach on Sunday, January 13, 2002, at 3:00 P.M.  Chandler Hall,  Old Dominion University.  FREE ADMISSION

Pianist Lee Jordan-Anders is Artist-in-Residence and professor of music at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia.  She began her early music training at Ball State University in Indiana, and received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from Northwestern University's School of Music where she studied piano with Pauline Lindsey.  In 1980 she pursued an active performing career in Madrid, Spain, both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles.  After returning to Norfolk in 1986, she became a member of the Virginia Wesleyan College music faculty where she teaches courses in aesthetics, listening, music theory, chamber music, and applied piano.

Ms. Jordan-Anders has published articles on various aspects of piano teaching in Clavier Magazine.  She is a frequent guest speaker and adjudicator for piano teachers organizations and continues to be an active performer and scholar, giving concerts and lectures throughout the United States.  In March of 1988 she made her debut with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.  She began Virginia Wesleyan's Familiar Faces concert series in 1986 and served as its director until 1997.

"The Piano +" is Lee Jordan-Anders' most recent project, featuring a series of recitals focusing on the works of one composer, with each program including a major work for solo piano as well as a work for chamber ensemble that includes piano.  Brahms was featured in 1997, Schubert in 1998 and Aaron Copland in 2000.

Margaret W. Hufstedler presents a program addressing techniques for determining the personality types of students.  She also suggests different teaching strategies in order to efficiently work with each of four learning styles.  She will include a way for teachers to determine their own individual teaching styles and show how to adapt teaching techniques to the particular learning style of the student.

Ms. Hufstedler attended Texas Tech University as a Music Education major.  She received a B.A. degree in piano from Old Dominion University in 1965, and an M.A. from The College of William & Mary in 1972 with additional work in piano pedagogy and piano.  She taught in the Norfolk Public Schools as an Elementary Music Specialist, maintained a private studio in Norfolk, taught class piano and music education at ODU, and piano and theory at Virginia Wesleyan College.  Until the Fall of 2000 she had a piano studio in her home in Lowesville, VA.  She has also taught part-time at Sweet Briar College and Randolph-Macon Women's College.

Margaret Hufstedler holds national certification with the Music Teachers National Association.  She has been active in the Virginia Music Teachers Association since 1972, having served as secretary for the state organization.  Presently she is a member of the VMTA Certification Committee.  She is also a past president of the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum.  Currently she is certification chair for both the Charlottesville Music Teachers Association and the Central Virginia Music Teachers Association.  She  chaired the CVMTA Theory, Skills & Sight-Reading Festival.  In addition to her professional activities, she serves as pianist in her church and presents two programs a year there.

Piano instructor, music teacher, composer, clinician Melody Bober has been active in music education for over 20 years.  As a composer, her goal is to create exciting and challenging pieces that are strong teaching tools to promote a life-long love, understanding, and appreciation for music.  Pedagogy, ear training, and musical expression are fundamentals of Melody's teaching, as well as fostering composition skills in her students.

Melody graduated with highest honors from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) in music education, and later received a master's degree in piano performance.  In addition to her private studio, Melody teaches music in public school, plays for church, accompanies and performs in numerous regional events, and conducts workshops across the country.  She and her husband Jeff reside in Minnesota with their daughter, Sarah.

Melody will present publications from FJH Music as well as share from her many teaching compositions and sacred music arrangements.

Robert Vandall and his wife, Karen, teach 100 students in their independent piano studio in New Philadelphia, Ohio.  He was born in Akron  but now enjoys living on the edge of the dairy farm where his wife was reared.  Before moving to New Philadelphia in 1977, Mr. Vandall taught group piano, music theory, music literature and listening, and directed the choral ensembles at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL for seven years.  Prior to that, he taught music at Mineral Area College in Flat River, Missouri.

 His B.M. in Piano Performance is from Baldwin-Wallace College Berea, OH and his M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois.  He received the University of Illinois School of Music Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1990 and the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music Achievement Award in 1991.

 His writing and arranging of piano education materials came directly from contact with his own students.  Kjos, Boston, Willis, Bradley, Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard Companies have all published his music.  Myklas Music Press is now his main publisher.  His body of works numbers nearly 400 titles.  He is in demand as a clinician and he and his wife have presented workshops in 30 states and the District of Columbia.  His workshops have been part of numerous national and state conventions.  His compositions are on many required lists of piano teachers organizations and that of the Junior Festival of the National Federation of Music Clubs.  He is a certified teacher of the Music Teachers National Association, the Ohio Music Teachers Association, and is active in the local affiliates of these organizations.  In addition to state and national conventions he as also been a faculty member of the International Workshop in Biarritz, France.  He was a clinician for the Goshen College Piano Workshop and was featured as their first Composer of the Year.  He and his wife were recently clinicians at the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Colorado.

 The Vandall's enjoy gardening, walking, hiking and bicycling.  They are parents of two grown sons and have recently become grandparents.  They are very active in the music ministry of their church as choir director, youth leaders and Sunday School musicians.  They also serve on various committees.

 The deadline to register students for this master class is September 20, 2002.

Hunter Moncure and Sonia Haxton have developed a published series of summer music camp programs.  These programs are enhanced by field trips to supplement what is taught in the camps.  In addition to the summer camp series, they have formulated a music lab program, soon to be published, which incorporates many aspects of music to enhance the private or group piano lesson.

 Hunter J. Moncure currently operates private piano studios both in her Williamsburg home and Newport News.  She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as a Master of Arts in Music and a Master of Music in Music History from George Washington University.  She has been teaching since 1973, including public school music in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.  She has developed and implemented a curriculum for grades K-8 and gifted children, produced and directed seven multi-media musicals, and assisted in writing the music curriculum for the "45/15" school program for the state of Virginia.  She was formerly a sales associate at the Center of Music accomplishing both institutional and private piano sales.

             Sonia C. Haxton has been teaching piano for over twenty years and currently operates a home studio in Virginia Beach.  She did pre-college studies and later began teaching piano under the tutelage of Hunter Moncure.  She received her Bachelor's Degree from Old Dominion University.  She has taught public school and implemented the group piano instruction in Virginia Beach for the Center of Music and the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation department.  Sonia also plays guitar and bass and is currently performing with other musicians as well as composing.  Her teaching style encourages individuality and student creativity through composition and performance.

By the time she was twelve, Joann Falletta played and enjoyed the guitar, cello and piano.  Frequently she went with her family to hear the New York Philharmonic.  She graduated from the Mannes College of Music as a classical guitar major, and then pursued two degrees from the Juilliard School of Music with her doctorate being in conducting.  She has established a reputation as a compelling and exciting orchestral conductor in great demand as guest conductor.  Currently she is musical director and conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and starting her eleventh year as musical director and conductor of the Virginia Symphony.  The Virginia Symphony has made six recordings under her baton and made its Carnegie Hall debut with her in 1997.   She is the recipient of numerous conducting awards including the Stokowski, Toscanini and Bruno Walter awards plus many awards for creative programming.

In 1974 Yvaine Duisit and Content Sablinsky, both members of the University of Virginia piano faculty, presented their first two-piano recital.  Since then they have played dozens of concerts at the University and elsewhere.  They were soloists with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra for performances of the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos, and they have appeared on the River Road Baptist Church series in Richmond.  Now retired from the University of Virginia, they maintain teaching studios in Charlottesville and are active in their local Wednesday Music Club as well as the Charlottesville Music Teachers Association.

 Yvaine Duisit received her training in Paris where she studied piano with Armand Ferté and organ with Maurice Durufflé.  She has served for many years as accompanist for the Charlottesville Oratorio Society and for choral groups at the University of Virginia, and she is assistant organist at St Paul's Memorial Church.

 Content Sablinsky received B.A. and M.A. degrees in music from Mills College, where she studied piano with Egon Petri and Alexander Libermann, and composition with Darius Milhaud and Leon Kirchner.  At the University of Virginia she was a member of the Albemarle Ensemble which did some touring, including a concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York.  She holds Master Teacher certification from MTNA and is outgoing Virginia State Chair for Local Associations.  She is currently on a national committee chaired by MTNA's current chair for local associations.

Jeanette Winsor received a B.Mus. degree cum laude in music education from Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio in 1974 and an M.M. degree in piano performance from Kent State University in 1977.  While at Heidelberg, her principal teachers were Shirley Harrison and Dr. John Rinehart.  Mrs. Winsor taught piano in the Heidelberg Preparatory Department and won Heidelberg's piano concerto competition.  At Kent State, she studied piano with Lois Rova Ozanich and musicology with Dr. Richard Shindle.  She also taught undergraduate class piano.  After moving to Tidewater, she coached with pianist Clifford Herzer for twelve years and has occasionally coached with Thomas Schumacher of the University of Maryland.  Additionally, she has taught piano at the Virginia Beach Friends School and the Virginia Governor's School for the Arts.  She holds State and National Professional Teaching Certificates from VMTA and MTNA.

Mrs. Winsor teaches piano at her own studio in Chesapeake, VA, and is an  adjunct instructor for the music departments at Old Dominion University    and Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach campuses. She is accompanist for the Virginia Beach Chorale and is the pianist and president of the Hardwick Chamber Ensemble.  She is an adjudicator for the National Guild of Piano Teachers, a faculty member of the American College of Musicians, and is the MTNA Southern Division Competitions Chair.  She is past president of the Virginia Music Teachers Association, Tidewater Music Teachers Forum, and Scherzo Music Club. 

 Mrs. Winsor frequently performs in solo and chamber music recitals.  She was a semi-finalist in the 1982 AMSA International Piano Competition and has performed as soloist with the Virginia Beach Community Orchestra, on the Family Fun Series at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, and on the Virginia Beach Symphony Concert Series.  As pianist with the Hardwick Chamber Ensemble she has performed in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Princeton. 

 Publications include "How to Deal with the ADHD Student in the Private Studio, (Piano Guild Notes July/August 1992), "How to Deal with the Learning Disabled Student" (Piano Guild Notes July/August 1993), and  "Why Piano Teachers Should Practice" (Piano Guild Notes June 1998).

 Myrenna Kickasola and Tonya Menard will give highlights of the MTNA National Convention which was held in Salt Lake City from March 15–19, 2003.  They will summarize the meetings they attended and bring back handouts and recital programs.  There will also be materials that they purchased for you to browse through.  New teaching materials (method books, supplementary material, videos, CD’s and computer software) are introduced at the convention every year.  This will be an opportunity to see what new materials are available for teaching.

Kenneth Lee, clarinetist, is an independent studio teacher in Vienna, Virginia.  He holds a Bachelor's degree with Honors in Economics from Cornell University, and has held a Graduate Research Fellowship with the Smithsonian Institution.  He is a clarinet student of Leon Russianoff, of the Juilliard School, and was a member of The United States Army Band.

 He teaches over forty clarinet students privately.  Thirteen of his private students have advanced to the National Finals of the Music Teachers National Association Woodwind Auditions.  In 1989, 1990 and 2001 his students were the National High School Woodwind First Place Winners, and in 1998 his student was the National Junior High School First Place Winner.  Graduating high school seniors have been awarded major scholarships as clarinet performance majors by Juilliard, the Cleveland Institute, Eastman, Michigan, Oberlin, New England Conservatory, Rice University, and many other institutions.  His students have been featured as Concerto Soloists with the National Symphony Orchestra and the United States Air Force Band.  He is a clarinet specialist teaching in three Fairfax County schools.

 Kenneth Lee has served as President of the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association and the Virginia Music Teachers Association.  In October, 2000, he was designated by the VMTA as its nominee for the first national "Music Teacher of the Year" selection of the MTNA.  In March, 2001, he began a two-year tenure as National Chair of the Independent Music Teachers Forum of the MTNA.  He is a frequent speaker at MTNA National Conventions, and chaired the Council of State Presidents Meeting at the 1997 Dallas Convention.  He was to have addressed the World Piano Pedagogy Conference in October, 2001, on the topic "Developing the Independent Music Studio."

 He is married to the pianist Marjorie Lee, and their son Daniel, a trumpet player, is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music.
